Open Access Maps

Open Access - commonly known as the ‘right to roam’ - is now available across England which means you are able to walk across mapped Access Land without the need to stick to paths.

For information on access in Wales, visit the Countryside Council for Wales website.

To search for Open Access land, follow the simple steps below:

  • Click on a region on the map below
  • Read and accept the terms and conditions concerning use of the maps
  • Use the drop down menu to select how you would like to search
  • Type in where you want to go [based on your search criteria]

Foot and Mouth Disease Outbreak – latest information for visitors to the countryside.

Natural England would like to reassure the public that the countryside is still open for your enjoyment.

At the present time, the only impacts on visitors are those which result from the restrictions on animal movements and animal gatherings.

There is a clear principle being applied by Natural England and the Government that there should be a presumption in favour of maintaining public access. Any decision to close land over which there is a public right of way, or where there is public open space or a right of access to open country, will continue to be taken on the basis of disease risk as determined through evidence provided by the specialists dealing with the outbreak. For the most up-to-date information, please visit the Defra website .

It's Spring! Please be aware of ground nesting birds and new lambs. You must keep your dog on a short lead between 1 March - 31 July, whilst on Open Access land, or at any time of year near livestock.
